Chapter 14, Verse 9

सत्वं सुखे सञ्जयति रज: कर्मणि भारत | ज्ञानमावृत्य तु तम: प्रमादे सञ्जयत्युत ॥9॥
sattvaṁ sukhe sañjayati rajaḥ karmaṇi bhārata | jñānam āvṛtya tu tamaḥ pramāde sañjayaty uta ||
"O scion of Bharata, the mode of goodness binds one to happiness; the mode of passion binds one to action; but the mode of ignorance, veiling knowledge, binds one to negligence."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 14.9 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

This verse delineates how the three gunas (modes of nature) tether the soul to the material world. Sattva-guna (goodness) creates an attachment to the internal sense of peace and clarity. While positive, it can become a 'golden chain' if one becomes complacent or proud of their knowledge. Rajo-guna (passion) drives the soul toward relentless activity, fueled by desires for prestige, wealth, and sensual gratification. Tamo-guna (ignorance) is the most restrictive; it shrouds the intellect's ability to discriminate truth, leading to 'pramada'—negligence, laziness, and a lack of focus, often resulting in self-destructive behaviors despite known consequences.
