Chapter 16, Verse 1
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 16.1 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.
Detailed Meaning
In this opening verse of the 16th Chapter, Krishna enumerates the first nine of twenty-six 'Daivi Sampatti' or divine qualities. These are not merely moral traits but spiritual disciplines. 'Abhayam' (fearlessness) is the foundation, arising from a lack of attachment to the transient. 'Sattva-samshuddhi' is the inner cleansing of motives. 'Jnana-yoga-vyavasthiti' implies staying anchored in the realization of the Self. 'Danam', 'Damah', and 'Yajnah' relate to our interaction with the world—giving, restraining the senses, and performing duty as an offering. 'Svadhyaya', 'Tapah', and 'Arjavam' relate to personal discipline—study, voluntary hardship for growth, and alignment of thought, speech, and action.
