Detailed Meaning

Lord Krishna explains that everything—from the food we consume to our spiritual disciplines—is categorized by the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas). Citing the Chandogya Upanishad, the subtlest part of food forms the mind, highlighting the psychosomatic link between diet and consciousness. This verse serves as an introduction to the detailed analysis of how our choices reflect our internal nature and how we can consciously elevate our state of being.
