Chapter 18, Verse 14

अधिष्ठानं तथा कर्ता करणं च पृथग्विधम् | विविधाश्च पृथक्चेष्टा दैवं चैवात्र पञ्चमम् ॥14॥
adhiṣhṭhānaṁ tathā kartā karaṇaṁ cha pṛithag-vidham | vividhāśh cha pṛithak cheṣhṭā daivaṁ chaivātra pañchamam
"The locus (body), the agent (doer), the various instruments (senses), the many distinct efforts, and finally, the divine (providence) — these are the five factors of action."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 18.14 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

Sri Krishna enumerates the five constituents necessary for any action to reach completion. 1. Adhiṣhṭhānam: The physical body or the seat of action. 2. Kartā: The agent or the doer (the soul identifying with the ego). 3. Karaṇam: The various instruments, including the five senses of perception and five organs of action. 4. Cheṣhṭhā: The different types of effort or vital life-energy (prana) put into the work. 5. Daivam: The fifth factor, which is Divine Providence or the fruits of past karmas sanctioned by the Supreme. This teaching humbles the ego by showing that the 'individual' is only one of five factors and not the sole cause of success or failure.
