śamo damas tapaḥ śaucaṁ kṣāntir ārjavam eva ca | jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāvajam
"The natural duties of the Brahmanas are the control of the internal and external organs, austerity, purity, forgiveness, straightforwardness, knowledge as also wisdom and faith."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 18.42 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

Lord Krishna defines the intrinsic qualities (svabhāva) of those whose nature aligns with the Brahmana varna. This is not about birthright, but about one's internal disposition. The Brahmana's path is defined by 'śama' (mental tranquility) and 'dama' (sensory restraint). 'Jñānam' refers to theoretical knowledge of the scriptures, while 'vijñānam' is the vital experiential realization of those truths in daily life. 'Āstikyam' is a deep-seated conviction in the spiritual order of the universe. These qualities are 'svabhāvajam'—born of one's own inherent nature—and serve as the foundation for those who guide society spiritually and intellectually.
