Chapter 18, Verse 48

सहजं कर्म कौन्तेय सदोषमपि न त्यजेत् | सर्वारम्भा हि दोषेण धूमेनाग्निरिवावृता: ॥48॥
saha-jaṁ karma kaunteya sa-doṣham api na tyajet | sarvārambhā hi doṣheṇa dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛitāḥ
"O son of Kunti, one should not give up the duty to which one is born, even though it be faulty. For all undertakings are surrounded with evil, as fire is with smoke."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 18.48 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

Lord Krishna explains the concept of 'Svadharma' or innate duty. In the material world, no action is perfectly pure; every endeavor carries some inherent flaw or negative byproduct, much like how fire—though useful and illuminating—inevitably produces smoke. One should not abandon their natural vocation (Sahajam Karma) simply because it contains defects. Instead, one must accept these imperfections as a natural part of material existence and focus on performing their duty with the right consciousness for spiritual purification.
