Chapter 3, Verse 38

धूमेनाव्रियते वह्निर्यथादर्शो मलेन च | यथोल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम् ॥38॥
dhūmenāvriyate vahnir yathādarśo malena ca | yatholbenāvṛto garbhastathā tenedamāvṛtam
"As fire is enveloped by smoke, as a mirror by dirt, and as a foetus remains enclosed in the womb, so is knowledge shrouded by desire."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 3.38 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

Lord Krishna uses three powerful analogies to describe how 'Kama' (desire/lust) obscures human wisdom (Jnana). The first analogy (fire and smoke) represents Sattva-dominant individuals where the covering is thin and easily removed. The second (mirror and dust) represents Rajas-dominant individuals, requiring more effort to clean. The third (fetus in the womb) represents Tamas-dominant individuals, where the covering is so thick that knowledge is completely temporarily suspended, requiring time and nature's course for liberation.
