Chapter 8, Verse 2

"Who is the Lord of sacrifice (Adhiyajna), and how does He dwell in this body, O Madhusudana? And how can You be known at the time of death by those of steadfast mind?"
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 8.2 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

In this verse, Arjuna asks the final two of his seven questions. He seeks to understand 'Adhiyajna'—the presiding deity of all sacrifices—and how that entity resides within the human physical frame. Furthermore, he asks a deeply practical and spiritual question: how can a person who has practiced self-control (niyatātmabhiḥ) realize or remember the Divine at the critical moment of death (prayāṇa-kāle)? This highlights the Vedic philosophy that our state of consciousness at the moment of departure determines our next destination.
