अन्तकाले च मामेव स्मरन्मुक्त्वा कलेवरम् | य: प्रयाति स मद्भावं याति नास्त्यत्र संशय: ॥5॥
antakāle ca mām eva smaran muktvā kalevaram | yaḥ prayāti sa mad-bhāvaṃ yāti nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ ||
"And at the time of death, anyone who departs by giving up the body while thinking of Me alone, he attains My state. There is no doubt about this."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 8.5 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

This pivotal verse establishes the law of 'final thought.' The consciousness one holds at the moment of death (Antakāle) determines the soul's destination. By practicing constant remembrance (Smaran) of the Divine throughout life, one ensures that the mind naturally gravitates toward God at the moment of transition. 'Mad-bhāvaṃ' refers to attaining the transcendental nature or the divine state of being, effectively liberating the soul from the cycle of rebirth. Krishna emphasizes 'Mām eva' (Me alone) to signify total absorption, and concludes with 'nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ' (there is no doubt) to provide ultimate assurance to the seeker.
