Chapter 16, Verse 9

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धय: | प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्माण: क्षयाय जगतोऽहिता: ॥9॥
etāṁ dṛiṣhṭim avaṣhṭabhya naṣhṭātmāno ’lpa-buddhayaḥ | prabhavanty ugra-karmāṇaḥ kṣhayāya jagato ’hitāḥ ||
"Holding on to this view, (these people) who are of depraved character, of poor intellect, given to fearful actions and harmful, wax strong for the ruin of the world."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 16.9 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

This verse describes the consequences of a purely materialistic worldview. When individuals lose touch with their higher spiritual identity (naṣhṭātmānaḥ) and possess limited intellect (alpa-buddhayaḥ) that ignores long-term karmic consequences, they engage in 'ugra-karma'—cruel or violent actions. This mindset, historically seen in tyrants and extreme materialists like Charvaka, prioritizes immediate sensory gratification even at the cost of the world's destruction. They become 'ahitāḥ' (enemies) of global harmony, using their power to exploit rather than uplift.
