Chapter 14, Verse 5

सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणा: प्रकृतिसम्भवा: | निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् ॥ 5 ॥
sattvam rajas tama iti guṇāḥ prakṛiti-sambhāvaḥ | nibadhnanti mahā-bāho dehe dehinam avyayam ||
"O mighty-armed Arjuna, the three modes of material nature—goodness (Sattva), passion (Rajas), and ignorance (Tamas)—born of material energy (Prakriti), bind the eternal soul to the physical body."
Key Insight:
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us through 14.5 that true peace is found when we align our actions with Dharma.

Detailed Meaning

Lord Krishna explains that the material energy (Prakriti) consists of three qualities called Gunas. These Gunas—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas—act like ropes that bind the 'Avyayam' (immutable/eternal) soul to the physical body. Though the soul is divine and unchanging, its identification with the body and mind (which are products of Prakriti) subjects it to the influence of these three modes, shaping its personality and behavior in the material world.
